Carl Czerny’s famous C major piano etude from his School of Velocity opus 299, is often remembered as dry, mechanical, and frustrating. But what if this little piece is not just a finger exercise, but a miniature concerto for beginning pianists?

In this video, I look at the first etude from Op. 299, show what is hidden in the music, and explain why the metronome mark changes everything. Played in its original Whole Beat context, this “hated” etude becomes musical, playable, and surprisingly enjoyable.
