Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s organ music still sounds astonishingly fresh more than 400 years later. In this Beyond the Notes episode, I explore the first variation of Wir glauben all an einen Gott and reveal how Sweelinck creates extraordinary power through unexpected harmonies, dissonances, imitation and rhetorical pauses.
Recorded on the Contius organ in St Michael’s Peace Church, Leuven.

![Is this the Most BORING Mozart Opening ever? Piano Sonata KV 279
In this video I sit at the clavichord to explore the the first bars of Mozarts first Piano sonata (KV 279). What at first may sounds flat and uninspired when you play it for the first time, turns out to hide a world of expression, timing, and rhetoric when you approach it from a little bit of creative perspective. I show how tiny shifts in accentuation and timing can completely transform the music — and why Carl Czerny’s tempo [quarter note = 120] makes perfect sense within the Whole Beat approach.
