In this video I sit at the clavichord to explore the the first bars of Mozart's first Piano sonata (KV 279). What at first may sounds flat and uninspired when you play it for the first time, turns out to hide a world of expression, timing, and rhetoric when you approach it from a little bit of 'creative' perspective. I show how tiny shifts in accentuation and timing can completely transform the music — and why Carl Czerny’s tempo [quarter note = 120] makes perfect sense within the Whole Beat approach.
