Today we outline the fundamental differences between traditional data centres and those specifically designed for artificial intelligence (AI).
We highlight that AI-focused data centres prioritize Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other accelerators over general-purpose Central Processing Units (CPUs) found in traditional centres, alongside high-speed networking for intense computational tasks. Consequently, AI data centres require significantly more power and advanced cooling systems, leading to higher operational and setup costs, often two to four times that of their conventional counterparts.
Their usage primarily involves training and deploying large AI models, contrasting with the diverse, smaller tasks handled by traditional centres. Furthermore, AI data centres often seek locations with abundant and inexpensive electricity and may have a shorter lifespan for their compute hardware due to rapid technological advancements.
