The Dell Precision M6400 and M6500 mobile workstations were plenty capable of replacing your desktop in 2008. While not quite true anymore, they've aged quite well for being fifteen years old and still offer what new laptops don't: expandability and serviceability in a professionally rugged package. Too bad there isn't a way to shoehorn in a modern CPU and GPU.
