Many Sony MiniDV and Digital8 Handycams (even a Hi8 model too!) came with a mysterious USB port near the AV and Firewire jacks that offered the ability to stream video from the tape to your computer. It's not all it's cracked up to be, and trades off quality for convenience.
It's also come to my attention that newer non tape-based Handycams came with USB streaming, though I don't have any and couldn't and therefore couldn't evaluate if the quality improved over the years. Still, for any kind of video transfer work whose quality you care about, don't use USB Streaming. Buy a Firewire card and cable or, in a pinch, just capture the video from the AV out jack(s) using a capture card or even an EasyCap.
