Originally released in 1957 on Sun Records, The Dance Album of Carl Perkins was never intended to be an audiophile showcase. It’s a raw, high-energy rockabilly compilation built from early Sun recordings — many of which later became famous through artists like Elvis Presley and The Beatles.
In this video, I review and compare a brand-new 2026 reissue from Intervention Records, assembled directly from the original master tapes and cut by Kevin Gray at Coherent Audio at 45 RPM, then pressed at Gotta Groove Records.
I compare this release directly to an earlier 1981 Sun Records reissue, exploring:
• How much fidelity can realistically be extracted from 1950s Sun recordings
• What Intervention Records brings to the table sonically and physically
• Whether a premium audiophile approach makes sense for this kind of material
• The strengths and limitations of both pressings
This isn’t about turning Carl Perkins into an audiophile demo disc — it’s about understanding what careful mastering and pressing can (and can’t) do for historically important rock ’n’ roll recordings.
