Joan Baez’s Farewell Angelina (1965) is a cornerstone of American folk music, and now it returns in a Craft Recordings all-analog reissue cut by Kevin Gray. In this video, I compare the new edition with an original Vanguard pressing, exploring not just the sound quality but the emotional weight of these performances.
With songs by Bob Dylan, Donovan, Woody Guthrie, and Pete Seeger, and the striking Richard Avedon photography, Farewell Angelina captures Baez at a defining moment. Vanguard’s audiophile-level recordings bring an intimacy and presence that still resonate powerfully today—I was deeply moved, even to tears, while listening.
I also connect this album to Baez’s later work, including her 1975 masterpiece Diamonds & Rust, which I reviewed previously on the channel.
