The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog (also known as the Czechoslovakian Vlcak) is not a recent “designer wolf mix.” It is a recognised working breed developed in 1955 in former Czechoslovakia.
• The breed began as a biological experiment led by Czech kynologist Karel Hartl, crossing German Shepherd Dogs with Carpathian wolves.
• The goal: combine the trainability of the German Shepherd with the stamina, hardiness and sensory acuity of the wolf.
• The initial wolf used was Brita, a female Carpathian wolf, bred to working-line German Shepherds.
• After several generations of backcrossing and selection, the dogs proved fertile and workable.
Recognition timeline:
• Nationally recognised in Czechoslovakia in 1982.
• Recognised internationally by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1989.
• Classified in FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs), Section 1 (Sheepdogs), without working trial requirement at international level.
Physical data:
• Height: Minimum 65 cm (males), 60 cm (females).
• Weight: Typically 26–40 kg.
• Coat: Straight, dense, with heavy winter undercoat.
• Colour: Yellow-grey to silver-grey with a characteristic light mask.
• Gait: Long-striding, tireless trot.
Working traits:
• Exceptional endurance — capable of covering 100 km in a day.
• High environmental sensitivity.
• Strong pack bonding and independence.
• Originally tested for border patrol work during the Cold War.
Genetics:
Modern Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are many generations removed from the original wolf crosses. They are a defined breed with a closed studbook under FCI systems — not random wolf hybrids.
Important distinction:
This is not the same as a high-content modern wolfdog. It is a standardised European working breed with regulated breeding programs.
Today, the breed is found across Europe and increasingly worldwide, valued for sport, tracking, endurance work, and experienced owners who understand primitive-type breeds.
Intelligent. Athletic. Intensely bonded.
But absolutely not a casual pet.
