Thomas Winterton has managed Skinwalker Ranch for Brandon Fugal for ten years. He did not arrive a believer. He arrived a contractor and a complete skeptic, a Utah businessman who says the paranormal was never on his radar growing up in the Uintah Basin. In this conversation with Jimmy Church on Beyond Belief, he explains what changed, and he goes further back than most guests ever do.
The curse of the skinwalker did not begin with the Sherman family or with Robert Bigelow. Winterton traces it to the mid-1800s, when Congress created the Indian reservations and pushed the Ute bands together in the Uintah Basin. The basin had been Navajo hunting ground. When Ute scouts joined forces with US soldiers and drove the Navajo out, a Navajo shaman answered the betrayal by laying a curse on that specific stretch of land - the skinwalker, described in Navajo tradition as a witch, a shape-shifting demonic being.
Winterton also describes the 'hitchhiker effect' - the reason his own family stopped treating any of this as a story. What happens at the ranch, he says, follows you home. It is a concern. It is something they have talked about. And not one of them thinks for a second that it is not real, because they have had a front row seat to what has happened at his place.
