In 2006 NASA launched New Horizons toward Pluto. It took nine years to arrive, and during a flyby that ran from June 2015 into October 2016 the probe captured almost 6,000 photographs of the little frozen world at the edge of our solar system. According to this account, 168 of those images were classified the moment they reached the ground - because they showed structures sitting just above the ice sheets, built into the side of a mountain.
Richard Doty walks through what allegedly happened next: the photographs were carried across to a secret space program, and a crewed mission designated Kronos Five flew to Pluto in 2016. Two landers went down carrying Earth-built robots called 'fenders' - bipedal machines strong enough and cold-tolerant enough to work outside in temperatures near 260 below Celsius, where no astronaut could survive. One of them found a way to open the structure. A slab of granite slid aside, and the machine walked into a vast, dimly lit facility.
Inside were carvings and frames along the walls, a long row of control panels, and behind them between nine and eleven robotic entities, faces enclosed like fencing masks, completely without power. Abandoned, apparently for a very long time. The same species of robot, he says, had already been encountered on an earlier Kronos mission to Mars. On the way out the fender passed a thin screen roughly one meter by three, with a single white dot tracking slowly across it - the only thing in the entire complex still switched on. It was carried back to Earth, and at Area 51 it was still running. No wires. No screws. No way to open it.
Elsewhere on the surface the second lander found a deep artificial shaft lined with regular tubes that analysts later identified as a mining operation, and a second radio signal from the north whose frequency matched a specific extraterrestrial race.
