The "cozy" spots on Moon, with perfect temperature. A ground-breaking new discovery!
We all know moon as a harsh and unlivable place.
Buzz Aldrin called the surface of the moon a "Magnificent desolation".
There is no atmosphere to regulate the temperature, or to provide protection against the cosmic radiation.
The Lunar surface reaches a temperature of 127 degrees Celsius or 260 degrees Fahrenheit, during the day.
At night this can drop to minus 173 degrees Celsius or minus 280 degrees Fahrenheit.
However, a remarkable new discovery suggests, that there are certain areas where the temperature stays around 17 degrees Celsius or 63 degrees Fahrenheit.
This "Goldilocks" zone has been found in a cavern in Mare Tranquillitatis, also known as the Sea of Tranquility.
The area where Apollo 11 had landed with the first humans on Moon.
This cave is around 100 meters down from the surface, and is shaped like a cylinder.
Sunlight only reaches a part of the cave's bottom, the rest remains in permanent shadow.
The shade does not allow the area to heat up too much, and the unique shape of the cave prevents the warmth from escaping.
Other than offering a pleasant temperature, the cave can provide shelter from cosmic and solar radiation, and from small meteorites.
Many such caves are expected to exist on the surface of the Moon. Scientists refer to these as Lunar pits.
These caves were formed from tubes that carried molten lava, beneath the Lunar surface, billions of years ago.
The discovery provides a great leap forward to engineers, planning to build a habitat on the Moon in the future.
