Okinawa is known throughout Japan as a place of immense beauty, and raging storms. The whole natural balance of things is kept in check by Mother Nature to ensure the diversity and vibrancy of these islands, and their associated flora and fauna, bounce along in harmony with itself. That is, until recently.
In this year alone a marked deterioration in the health of the reefs surrounding the island can be seen. Many people believe this is due to the increasing warmth of the Ocean waters. Normally Okinawa, from the months of April through November is the recipient of numerous Typhoons. These powerful storms flush out the warmer waters and bring nutrient rich cooler waters from the Ocean depths across the reefs of Okinawa.
Sadly thus far the 2024 storm season has yielded zero storms. Some slight rain during the 'wet season' is standard, but no buckle me down storms to bring that respite to the reefs of Okinawa. To that end the sight of bleaching corals is now all too common in pretty much all fringing reefs of the main island, and beyond throughout the prefecture.
This video was shot today during a snorkel swim with my wife and I at another segment of Kibogaouka Beach in Okinawa.
As much as the reef at times may look quite stunning, there are many issues with the general health of the majority of reefs in Okinawa.
We need a good storm to wash these reefs with colder waters.
