Debunking, like the excellent work from @LabMuffinBeautyScience and @Moskinlab is essential, but it’s not enough. It’s emotionally taxing, often unpaid, and leaves science communicators vulnerable to harassment. We currently do not have any kind of decent infrastructure to support this kind of work, and that’s a big problem.
Real change means tackling the algorithms that fuel misinformation and empowering the public to spot falsehoods before they go viral. Science communicators can help, but we desperately need support.
For “expert” accounts - whether you’re an individual or an organization, the continued influence effect is one more reason to be cautious about what you post, to do your best to be accurate, and to correct yourself publicly when you’re not. Simply deleting incorrect posts isn’t enough. Even with a correction, the misinformation will stick for many, but at least you’ll have a chance to reach your audience. Accounts that refuse to self-correct show a lack of accountability, and that should be a glaring red flag that they’re not a trustworthy source.
