I've been wanting to cover this song for over a decade now. I just haven't figured out exactly how I wanted to do it. Then I heard my friends Josiah and Michelle in Orcamind do their song "The Comm Stays On" and realized that I'd never be able to do something that was that emotional and tied into the game in such a warm way the way the song is. It's not a song many people may have heard if they just blasted through the menu to play, but when I was little, I would leave it on and stare at the ceiling for hours listening to it. With the new Star Fox coming out, I realized now is the time to finally do it, so I just asked if I could arrange The Comm in my style. They happily agreed.
I listened to all of my favorite Power Ballads as I wanted to really find what made one so emotionally hitting and I took elements from all of my favorites for my arrangement of this song. Notably, Sieze the Day by A7X, Through Her Eyes by Dream Theater, Fade to Black by Metallica, and a little bit of Disturbed's Sound of Silence... you'll probably hear a little bit of all of those influencing this one. I went really heavy on synth pads and background effects, but I really wanted to focus on the vocals with the mix and try and make my guitar lines weave in with them.
The thing I love the most about these lyrics is how the song is undeniably about James and Fox navigating his feelings about him, but it can be applied to so many other things. Josiah wrote such a powerful song that can be applied to anyone who hasn't given up on someone not in their life anymore. It means a lot to me on so many levels and it's a real priveledge to get to do this version with him and Michelle in this way.
With Star Fox dropping soon, I'm looking forward to playing and being reminded of many of the songs I've been wanting to cover for a long time. This won't be the end of the Star Fox covers, but there's another game coming out this week that I'm inevitably going to cover music from so, look out for that next!

This was the one cover I said I would never do.
The reason why is silly but I think it was important to an older me. I really didnt feel like I enjoyed Halo all that much growing up. I still remember playing it for the first time in a Circuit City (OLD) when it had just came out, and I was really excited to play it. I spent countless hours enjoying the multiplayer, but I really struggled to enjoy the story. The whole thing felt like such a slog to me for some reason.
In the early days of YouTube for me, I always felt like what made a cover good was the players emotional attachment to the game. I really thought you could feel it listening to someone who loved the game rather than just someone putting it out because it got views. I was so committed to making a name for myself as someone who only did songs from games I liked.
I enjoyed making this cover, and I really love this song. So its strange to think that my enjoyment of a story mode in a gmae I otherwise enjoyed barred me from doing this for so long. I really did have a blast getting to play this iconic song on guitar and add my own flair to it. Its nice to line this up with the rerelease while others are enjoying it again so it felt like a great time.

Ive had quite a time recently speedrunning this game, but rarely ever make it to this part. My stream chat however, will tell you that every time I get to the final part I get this riff stuck in my head and talk about how badly I want to cover it. Predictably so, it was so much fun to arrange and track.
I knew that this would be significantly easier to pull off than some of the other tracks Ive been doing because of the repetitvie nature of it, and since I really needed to churn something out quick this week after doing a filming project in LA this past week, this song was perfect to tackle now.
Especially now that mario is ded. Rip. Anyway, hope you enjoy!
