On 25 December 1979, the Soviets launched their invasion of Afghanistan. This was after Mohammad Taraki had been overthrown by Hafizullah Amin. Amin was an unreliable ally and the Soviet's thought that an invasion was necessary. The US were outraged by the invasion and Jimmy Carter withdrew SALT II from Senate negotiations. This essentially ended the process of détente and initiated the Second Cold War.
