The American Civil War placed the Confederate States of America in the South against the Union in the North. It revolved around the issue of slavery and when the anti-slavery party (the Republicans) came into power in 1861 in the form of Abraham Lincoln, many states seceded. The Union were able to eventually succeed in 1865 after Robert Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant.
