Religious developments under Elizabeth I were the cause of the Puritans (the Presbyterians and the Separatists) and the Catholics. Although the Religious Settlement 1559 had been an effective compromise between Protestants and Catholics, the staunchest among them were an issue. The Puritans wanted further reform and the Catholics wanted a Counter-Reformation. The problem of the Catholics was increased in the 1570s after Elizabeth was excommunicated and there was the St. Bartholomew's Massacre in 1572.
