Hello and welcome to Pontus Presents! Here we have The Climber, book 1, with art by Shinichi Sakamoto and story by Yoshio Nabeda, published by Viz Media. The mangas original run was between 2007 and 2011 and it’s based on a novel by Jirō Nitta.
Yoshio Nabeda wrote the story for the first two volumes so all the chapters in this 2-in-1 edition is written by him. Hiroshi Takano then writes the story for volumes 2-4 so the next edition of the English release will feature his writing. And the manga is then completely written and drawn by the artist Sakamoto for the rest of the 17 volumes.
This edition is, like I mentioned, a 2 volumes-in-1 edition. It’s bound in paper in a glued perfect binding with non-acid free paper. The first four pages are printed in color on photographic paper. The print quality is pretty good and the book opens up fairly well. It is printed and bound in the US.
The manga also has two interviews with famous Japanese climbers as well as a climbing glossary. I have heard great things about this manga and it’s considered one of the best seinen by many people.
However, I guess the manga will shine more when Sakamoto takes over it completely as I found the beginning to have some pacing issues and a general ”sports” manga feel which I guess will change the longer it goes on for. But this first book was good enough for me to continue reading this manga, and I will definitely buy the upcoming editions.
