The idea that Christianity simply borrowed its beliefs from older pagan religions becomes harder to defend when historians conclude that key events in Jesus’ life — such as his teaching, extraordinary acts, crucifixion, and the experiences of his followers after his death — are rooted in real historical events. If these events actually happened, then critics cannot easily dismiss them as copied myths or legends from pagan stories.
