The Churning of the Sea of Milk

This is the full story as told to us by our guide. I enjoyed listening to it so thought I would share it with you. It was too long to add to Angkor Wat vlog so I have included it as a stand alone video. Please watch the Angkor Wat full day tour

The churning of the sea of milk is a significant episode in Hindu mythology, particularly within the Puranas. It tells of a time when the gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras) united to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrita) from the cosmic ocean of milk. The story begins with the Devas losing their strength and power due to a curse by the sage Durvasa. In desperation, they seek help from Vishnu, who advises them to churn the ocean to obtain Amrita.

Both Devas and Asuras agree to the task, using Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope. Vishnu incarnates as a tortoise, Kurma, to support the mountain on his back, preventing it from sinking. The churning process begins, and numerous treasures and beings emerge from the ocean, including the deadly poison Halahala, which Shiva consumes to save the universe, turning his throat blue.

Finally, Dhanvantari, the divine physician, appears with the pot of Amrita. A fierce battle ensues as both Devas and Asuras struggle to gain possession of the nectar. Vishnu, in the guise of the enchanting Mohini, distracts the Asuras and distributes the Amrita to the Devas, ensuring their victory and immortality. This story symbolizes the eternal struggle between good and evil and the collaborative effort required to achieve great rewards.
