In 1764 Horace Walpole's novel The Castle of Otranto began the gothic genre with the crashing of an mystical helmet. The helmet in question landed on Conrad, heir to the Otranto title and son of Manfred. Without an heir to his throne, Manfred would pursue Princess Isabella through his maze-like castle, a monastry and mountainous caves.
