Intro goof-Lucas and Cameron comparing revisionism notes: 00:00
Discussion 04:30

My thoughts on James Cameron's beyond APPALLING treatment of his own films on these new 4K masters. The UHDs are themselves properly made by Disney but merely give the viewer a higher quality version of the same abominable things found on streaming. Cameron and his team have tried their darnedest to strip out the look of film and the actual time period in which these films were made. None were properly restored with all new work from the ground up as they should have been. These are now the standard version in print complete with DNR to hell and back, remixed sound, altered color timing, flattened images and worst of all an astoundingly stupid application of new AI tools to try and manipulate each film to within an inch of their lives resulting in hideous artifacts at times. Some fare better than others. Titanic even had some degree of this insane processing applied. True Lies fares the worst as it had the most processing...because they used an old video master that had sat on the shelf and was never released before.

These set a dangerous new precedent for film preservation and catalog titles moving forward. NO ONE needs to follow Cameron's lead on this. NO film deserves this fate. What makes this all the more painful is that fans have waited DECADES for a proper modern release of True Lies and The Abyss in particular. Those films have been locked to old crummy DVD ports of Laserdisc masters-and in the case of True Lies, Cameron's revisionism struck there from the beginning as that LD master was ruined in overprocessing. To compound matters, most reviews so far indicate to potential buyers that this is somehow okay or that it's not so bad or that a director should be allowed to manipulate a past film to this degree without first preserving it properly.

It is perfectly understandable that fans will still want to pick these up-but in doing so it supports this crazy revisionism. I strongly encourage anyone to look at the streaming versions or online discussion first before purchasing any of these releases. In my opinion these should be boycotted and avoided to show a message with our wallets that this is not OK.
