I review the second of Sanctum’s reprints featuring the adventures of The Phantom Detective. Lasting for 20 years in pulp magazines, the Phantom Detective is second to the Shoadow in longevity and had an enormous influence on pop culture and the emerging comics industry. The character is essentially part detective, part crimefighter and part master of disguise. The influence on Batman alone is quite staggering and reading this character can frequently feel like reading a Batman story. In this volume Sanctum features the story that has the beacon signal that alerts the Detective to rush downtown for an assignment-this idea was revived in Batman comics and became the Bat Signal.
Sanctum as usual pairs two novels with a great historical essay about the people behind the series and the Batman connections. Additionally as an extra we get treated to a reproduced Phantom Detective comic. Unfortunately Sanctum only got to do two volumes for the character but Adventure House has been doing reprints of their own for some time.
