The Book That Exposed the Prosperity Gospel Kenneth Hagin The Midas Touch. Did you know that Kenneth E. Hagin—the man who helped pioneer the Word of Faith movement—actually warned that the movement was going off the rails? Just three years before he died, Hagin wrote a book called The Midas Touch, and many people have never read it. In that book, he warned that Christians were becoming obsessed with money, prosperity, and material success instead of Jesus Christ. The shocking part? Many of the very teachers who looked to Hagin as a spiritual father continued preaching the same prosperity message he was warning against.
Around 1999, reports indicate that Kenneth Hagin privately gathered leading Word of Faith ministers in Tulsa before The Midas Touch was released. According to multiple accounts, he wanted to correct what he believed had become a distorted "get rich" version of the prosperity message. He reportedly gave them advance copies of the book and urged them to reconsider the direction the movement was heading.
In The Midas Touch, Hagin taught that prosperity should never become the goal of Christianity. He warned against making money an idol, measuring spiritual maturity by financial success, or turning giving into a formula for getting rich. Instead, he emphasized seeking God's kingdom first, living with contentment, and keeping Jesus Christ at the center of the gospel.
Fast forward to today, and many people believe the very things Hagin warned about have become the defining characteristics of much of the modern Word of Faith movement. Financial scandals, celebrity preachers, and an overwhelming focus on wealth have caused many Christians to question the movement's direction.
Whether you agree with Kenneth Hagin's theology or not, The Midas Touch raises an important question for every believer: Are we following Jesus... or are we chasing blessings?
