In his sermon “Casting Down Strongholds,” Derek Prince begins by discussing different racial and ethnic groups and the spiritual powers that can influence cultures. He even addresses his own people, the British, saying that pride can be a spiritual stronghold within British culture.
Prince then turns specifically to African Americans and Black churches. He says that Black Christians can reach a certain point spiritually, but then something seems to hinder them from moving forward. He connects this to the legacy of slavery, arguing that while African Americans had been politically emancipated, in his view, that did not necessarily mean they had been fully spiritually emancipated. He goes on to connect what he calls a “spirit of slavery” with religious legalism and discusses how he believed legalism had affected parts of the Black American church.
I previously shared this clip on my YouTube channel, where it received hundreds of thousands of views, so I know the message resonated with a lot of people. It also sparked some amazing conversations in the comments and chat. I still believe the African American church has not been completely set free from the generational trauma associated with the horrific history of slavery, and that some of those wounds can continue to play themselves out within churches today.
