Phillip Anthony Mitchell and 2819 Church in Atlanta recently baptized an incredible 4,800 people in a massive baptism event—far exceeding the 3,000 people originally anticipated. In this video, I celebrate what God is doing through 2819 Church while asking an important question: Who is going to disciple these 4,800 people? Baptism is an incredible beginning, but Jesus never called us simply to make converts—He called us to make disciples. Using the Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13 and Paul’s words about spiritual fatherhood in 1 Corinthians 4:15, we examine why preaching, large gatherings, and powerful moments must be followed by personal discipleship that produces deep roots and lasting spiritual fruit.
We’ll also examine Jesus’ model of discipleship—which was framed by Peter Scazzero Emotionally Healthy Discipleship. Jesus made his investment in the 3, the 12, the 70/72, and the larger multitudes—and ask whether the modern American church has become too focused on attendance, baptisms, followers, and impressive numbers rather than developing spiritually mature Christians. We’ll discuss lessons from Billy Graham’s crusades, Emotionally Healthy Discipleship, spiritual fatherhood, and the difference between evangelism and true life-on-life discipleship. I rejoice over the 4,800 baptisms at Phillip Anthony Mitchell’s 2819 Church, but the real test comes next: Will these new believers be discipled, rooted in Christ, connected to healthy Christian community, and raised up to become mature followers of Jesus? Bigger isn’t necessarily better—when it comes to discipleship, we need to recover Jesus’ emphasis on quality, depth, relationship, and multiplication.
