There is a medieval “Last Supper” associated with the Bogomils, and on the surviving manuscript appears a sentence that leads directly back to Bulgaria: the book was “brought from Bulgaria.”
How did a Bulgarian Bogomil text make its way to Northern Italy and Southern France — and why was it the Inquisition that ultimately preserved it for the future?
The text is known as The Questions of John (*Interrogatio Iohannis*) and takes the form of a dialogue between Christ and the Apostle John during the Last Supper.
But this is not a lost early Gospel.
It is a medieval dualist apocryphal text whose ideas are associated with the Bogomil tradition and with the spread of dualist movements from the Balkans into Western Europe.
In Manuscript No. 109, preserved in the municipal library of Dole, France, the text survives among materials used by inquisitors.
At the end of the text is a brief Latin note stating that this was the secret book of the heretics of Concorezzo, brought from Bulgaria by their bishop, Nazarius.
It is precisely this note that makes the story one of the most fascinating Bulgarian connections in medieval Europe.
