In December 1948, green orbs, discs, and fireballs began appearing over New Mexico—not just anywhere, but over the region where the United States kept its most closely guarded secret.
This is Episode 2 of “The Alien Files: What Is America Hiding?” In this episode, we go deep inside one of the strangest files in the newly declassified UFO archives: the Sandia case of 1948–1950.
The 116-page declassified file contains 209 reports of green orbs, discs, and fireballs observed over Sandia Base, Los Alamos, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and West Texas. The witnesses were not random civilians. They included military pilots, civilian aviators, special agents, and employees of the Los Alamos laboratory.
The military brought in Lincoln LaPaz, one of America’s leading meteor experts. They expected him to conclude that the objects were simply meteors. Instead, he reached a very different conclusion: the green fireballs did not behave like ordinary meteors.
At a closed-door conference held at Los Alamos in 1949, the mystery reached scientists including Edward Teller, Norris Bradbury, and Fred Reines. They considered meteors, rockets, optical effects, electronic explanations, Soviet programs, and even the possibility that these phenomena were not physical objects in the conventional sense.
