It’s well known that Paul McCartney played drums on this song as it was recorded during the brief period that Ringo left the band during the White Album sessions. The debate for many years though is whether or not Paul played the outro section of the song. There is a very clear edit where a different take is spliced in that occurs just as the drums go into the more chaotic ending. Many people believe that Paul wasn’t capable of playing this ending. I completely disagree with that. However, I do feel that the phrasing of everything that is played in that section has Ringo stamped all over it. Many people believe that he overdubbed a new outro after he rejoined the band in September of ‘68. That seems very possible to me. Unfortunately though, there is no recording log or documentation showing that this ever happened. It’s possible that it just mistakenly didn’t get logged at the time. Who knows? Ringo claims that he had nothing to do with the song and that it’s all Paul. I’ll let you all discuss that one in the comments. 😉
Regarding the outro of this song, I did not transcribe any of it. Just played it from memory. It’s very close but it’s not note for note perfect. I even did my best to recreate the moment where the tea towel falls of the snare drum and the tone of the drum very audibly changes.
