Last week's instrumental in B 7th deserves a follow-up instrumental in B Minor, because why not? I made this tune up back in my teen years. Unfortunately, there's not really an interesting story to go along with it. I was just picking around in my room one day when I happened upon a riff or two that sounded interesting, then I sort of built the tune around those licks. I never came up with a title for the song, so since I'm uploading it after The Blind Pig Bounce, I figured why not call this one the B Minor Bounce?
The original instrumental that I played with Corie and shared last week did so well (6,000 views in just a couple of days) that I wanted to play this one with Corie too, but we couldn't get our schedules synchronized. Woody only takes one nap per day, and that's when it has to happen. We wanted to pick outside again, but the rain was another factor or variable. Anyway, I wound up doing this one by myself, though it would have been much easier with Corie playing rhythm, not to mention it would have sounded better.
As Pap would say, I slurred more notes in this take than I picked clearly, but hopefully I played it well enough to give Acorns a sense of what the song is supposed to sound like. It probably goes without saying, but this one is much more difficult to play than the Blind Pig Bounce. :-) My shoulder is slowly, slowly getting better, but I still can't sit down and throw my arm over the guitar the way I normally would prefer to pick. Standing and shifting the neck of the guitar upward makes it easier on my shoulder but also makes the left-hand part of the picking harder to do correctly. At least, those are my current excuses. If my shoulder gets better, I'm sure I can come up with some new ones. :-)
This Saturday, I will share a video of the last morning song "show" that Hickory Stand played at the John C. Campbell Folk School (back on June 5th). Unfortunately, because the performance fell during the workday/work week, Caleb was unable to join us, but the set still turned out pretty well. We had Wayde Powell, III on banjo and Perry Stalcup on bass. We did a few songs that most Acorns probably haven't heard us do as a band, so maybe it will prove interesting. Unfortunately, the audio quality is a little on the weak side. It wasn't weak at the venue, but kind of like the videos that I shared from the Martins Creek Community Center, it may be hard for some viewers to hear the words (both during the singing and during the banter between songs). I increased the volume as much as a could, but again, some folks may have a hard time hearing it well. We thank Tipper for making the video with her phone. Without her doing that, there would have been no video at all. The Folk School live streamed the performance, but they lost audio completely for a good portion of the set. Lord willing, it will publish Saturday morning at 8.
I still haven't decided whether or not to take apart the VHS of Pap and Granny singing in order to clean away the mildew inside, but whether I clean it or play it as is, I'll hopefully be able to transfer the video to DVD. Then I'll upload it so folks will be able to see them sing next Tuesday for Old Timey Tuesday. Thanks so much for watching!
