I forgot that in my last original Thursday, I said that the next original song would be "We've Almost Forgotten God" from the Words of Life album. I got ahead of myself. Lord willing, I'll share that song of Pap's next week. Instead, here are two original songs: one that I wrote, followed by one that Pap wrote, using my melody. Longtime Acorns may remember when I shared a video of the Millsaps Family singing Amazing Grace in a minor key. Scott Millsaps told me that he learned to do Amazing Grace that way from a young, traveling missionary who was visiting this area back in the early 70's or late 60's. One night around a camp fire, the young man showed Scott and some other young campers how to sing Amazing Grace to the tune of "House of the Rising Sun." He told Scott that they were going to take back that melody or tune and use it for the Lord. In a sense, that's what Pap was doing by using my melody for "Rescue Me." It wasn't that my song was immoral or bad in some way. It was just that Pap thought a melody that good should be used to sing about the Lord. Afterall, all beautiful music and melody comes from Him and belongs to Him. Whoever that young missionary was, who crossed paths with Scott 50 years ago, he and Pap saw music the same way, as a gift from God that can and should be used to honor Him. *Pap's opening lines may have been inspired by Hebrews 2:15-17.
