During the final days of the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, Chicago’s mayor Carter Henry Harrison III was assassinated on October 28, 1893 by Patrick Eugene Prendergast. His death occurred just days before the closing of the historic Chicago World’s Fair.

Harrison had promoted the fair as showing the “true Chicago,” raising questions about what he meant. The White City’s massive neoclassical buildings were said to be temporary, yet photographs suggest structures far more durable than expected.

Was the timing of the mayor’s assassination and the end of the fair simply coincidence, or part of a deeper story behind the 1893 World’s Fair?
