"The Alley Cat" started out as a popular instrumental song made most famous when it was released by Frank Björn, the pseudonym used by Danish pianist and composer Bent Fabric (or Bent Fabricius-Bjerre). Jack Horlen wrote the English lyrics for his 1962 record, and Peggy Lee trilled her version of the song for Capitol in 1963.
