"Snowiest Start for the Twin Cities in Almost Two Decades" with 22.9" observed at the NWS office so far this season.

The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have essentially shut down Saturday afternoon. No busses, no trains and all the stores and malls have shut down. A 100 mile stretch of I-94 between Minnesota and west central Wisconsin closed.
Emergency officials in some counties issued statements saying that will no longer respond to stranded motorists unless injuries were involved... there were too many to keep up with. Many folks were trapped in their cars overnight.
Early morning Sunday morning, the Metrodome roof collapsed due to the 18 inches of snow that laid upon it overnight!

A major winter storm is ongoing in the Midwest this weekend.
The combo of heavy snow and strong winds have resulted in very dangerous travel conditions. Numerous roads have been closed and in some cases plows have been pulled off the roads.
Snow totals in the Twin Cities metro ranged from just over 17" at the airport to almost 22" in the southwest metro.
Saturday was the snowiest December day on record in the Twin Cities (16.3"), and the fifth greatest snowstorm all-time (17.1" total), dating back to 1875. This was the heaviest snow dump on the metro since the infamous Halloween Blizzard of 1991.
