Day 13
Locations: Esper Caves, Thamasa, The Veldt
Steps Taken: 25,595
Playtime: 33 minutes
Total Playtime: 12:22
Characters: Locke (L15) Terra (L15) Relm (L15) Strago (L17) Gau (L15)
This wasn't a long day, but was eventful in the sense that various big things happen in the game. I'd gone bowling, so I had to make it a shorter one considering Day 14 will likely be long, maybe my longest so far (not counting the hours of failing the mine cart section). Anyway, I went over to the Crescent Mountain to find some Espers. I did try to grab a Gaia Gear from a Baskervor on my way since I ran into 2 of them, just 1 encounter though. Once I got there, I took the cave outside to the left forgetting there's no chest here, so that was just wasted time. I'm not even sure why that's there to begin with. Oh, probably because Relm comes from the north and a 1st time player would probably go chasing her, but that's a great way for some kid in the 90s to get really lost.
Took the cave to the right, with Relm continuing to pop up out of nowhere, and eventually found the room of the 3 "Goddesses" since "Gods" would've been too far for Nintendo of America. In fact, this part has always confused me. It's explained as if these statues are THE statues of the Warring Triad, but they aren't. You have to actually read the lettering on them to find out that the statues here were a vow to let the real Gods of Magic (Warring Triad) sleep peacefully. To be honest, I think this whole bit is just badly translated, but I remember being a bit confused playing the GBA version too. All I know is, that's not the Warring Triad, those are beyond the Sealed Gate. Despite this, these statues have great magical power, which is supposed to be what led the Espers here. I did bother to read the statues just for the sake of it. Looked it up and these are actually statues OF The Triad, which are also statues...
Ultros falls from the ceiling of the cave out of nowhere, wanting those statues for "Ziegfried" who as you recall had 3 different spellings within 1 room on the Phantom Train. I made sure to steal his White Cape right away which took just 1 try, unlike a certain paintbrush. This is the easiest Ultros battle so far probably, he almost wiped me at the Opera. Actually, he kind of almost did here too thanks to Relm. She shows up out of nowhere all cutesy and wanting to paint Ultros' portrait, then goes as far as to want to jump off a cliff when he says no. Ultros went for the ultimate ragebait there because Terra flipped, which is really the first time you see her get that emotional for someone else's sake, a foreshadowing of how she is around children later. Locke and Terra convince Ultros to cooperate, only for Relm not to.
Sketch failed off the bat, which was better than me getting the Sketch Bug and having to redo the day. I've had that bug happen just trying to do the fight normally so many times, I should've got a 1.1 rom. I should've stopped attacking Ultros after this, because he did major damage with Tentacle after, killing Relm and making me revive her. You wanted to die because he wouldn't let you, now you're dead because you suck at it. Yeah, I won't be using you in my party much. I narrowly escaped disaster when she got it the 2nd time around and then joined the party. Was surprised she joined at 15 instead of 14 since I thought she joined -1 from the party average, but she joins at the average. Her base magic stat is actually ridiculous even without the Zoneseek bonus. I went into the trap floor room after and grabbed the Chocobo and Tabby Suits for Relm & Strago, not that I'm going to even use them for awhile. I could've taken the other trap floor for like, an X-Ether but decided not to.
I could type up the whole story of finding the Espers, meeting back with Leo in Thamasa, but that entire series of scenes speaks for itself. Anyone could've seen coming that Leo was being used to make the Empire look good to backup Gestahl's nonsense. The grave scene for him after he's killed by Kefka, where Terra says "I wanted to learn so much more from you" hits a bit heavier if you'd talked to him about continuing their conversation later before talking to Locke and landing near Thamasa. I always sort of disliked how the game goes from all this to suddenly jokes with Edgar and Relm, but this is the last time anything is funny for awhile. Once I got control of the ship again, I set up for checking the Veldt out a bit, but once I landed on Lobo, knowing I was in table 1, I knew nothing interesting would appear, so I saved and ended Day 13. I expect 14 to be pretty long, and likely won't even be finished with the Floating Continent until 15, a day before I'm forced to complete it.
