HONORABLE MENTION: 2013 ConBravo InVid Showcase!
#60 was, well, in a word... inspired.
Sometimes I'll hear a particular music track and think, "That would make an awesome video," and then I spend a long while figuring out exactly what to use it for. Other times, it's the reverse.
This video is the exception to both circumstances - it sprang to mind almost immediately after I became aware of the source material, and I knew what music I wanted to use with it. It completely wrecked my concentration at work, so I took an early lunch break and spent an hour frantically scripting it before I forgot it.
The material - the story of the Nostalgia Critic.
The music - "Save Me" by the group Globus.
The Nostalgia Critic is probably the most famous character created by Doug Walker (aka That Guy with the Glasses). Originally a simple alter-ego movie reviewer, known for his caustic personality, scathing sarcasm, quick wit, and sheer volume, the Critic evolved over time into a much deeper character, with a backstory and complex issues, leaping off the screen and taking on a life of his own.
But as the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end," and eventually Doug decided to retire the character after the fourth anniversary special.*
Enter the aforementioned video idea.
Although a relatively recent arrival to the Critic's fandom, I was quickly drawn in, and after watching the character's swan song, I really wanted to do a video. The day after watching TO BOLDLY FLEE, while sitting at work, I suddenly had my concept, and what song I wanted to use.
Enter the song "Save Me."
Globus, a group related to the music production firm Immediate Music, has long been one of my favorite bands. For ages, I'd wanted to do a video to their music, and this was my chance. They graciously gave me permission to use "Save Me" (I think the fact I openly grovelled probably helped).
Still, I was reluctant to actually make this - several other people have created some fantastic videos about the Critic (and several of the other Channel Awesome producers), and the idea of even trying to join their ranks was a daunting one. However, the simultaneous events of receiving permission to use "Save Me", and the announcement by Channel Awesome and ConBravo of a video contest in celebration of "geek"... I figured, "what the hell." So here is my "celebration of geek".
Whether or not this will even make the Honorable Mention list for the contest, I have no idea. But I'm glad I made this. It is, in effect, a tribute not only to the Nostalgia Critic, but to Doug Walker as well. So this one goes out to the Critic and the Creator. Cheers, you two. You've both made my world a brighter place.
