Test of Copter-3.4's terrain following during missions but at a low altitude (2m). This development was sponsored by Gateway Geospatial.
The vehicle flew at 5m/s horizontally and dropped as low as 1.3m and then climbed as high as 2.8m when it encountered a steep slope. With gentle slopes it basically has no troubles maintaining 2m.
Vehicle was a 3DR IRIS, Lidar Lite range finder and 2-axis Tarot Gimbal+GoPro. Lidar-Lite is difficult to find so I would recommend instead the (more expensive but also more reliable) Lightware SF10A, SF10B or SF11C.
