Most people think of termites as pests because they eat wood. But that is exactly why they are an essential part of many ecosystems. They eat wood and other plants which they cannot digest but the protozoans and bacteria that live in termite guts can digest cellulose and return those nutrients to the soil and therefore the food chain.
Termites are social insects. Some biologists think a termite colony is basically one organism in the sense that different individuals have specific jobs. The queen reproduces. The soldiers protect. The workers do all the work from building their home to feeding the immature termites and the queen.
