200 years ago there were around 60,000,000 bison in North America. They coexisted with native Americans for millennia. But then white people decided they wanted to expand west and tragically almost wiped out the Indians. One of the ways they did that was by almost totally wiping out the bison population. What had been 60 million bison was reduced to very close to zero. Today there only about 30,000 bison with the largest population in Yellowstone.
