Earlier this year, our African elephant Tendaji underwent a pulpotomy – a procedure similar to a root canal – to treat his fractured tusk. Performing this kind of procedure on a nearly 10,000-pound elephant is no small feat. The three-hour procedure was made possible by weeks of careful preparation, training by the animal care staff, and the collaboration of more than 50 staff members and veterinary specialists from institutions across the country.
We’re happy to share that the procedure was a success, and Tendaji continues to do well thanks to the dedicated care of our animal care and veterinary teams.
