A way of Improving the stability of the original Ten Tec PTO in the Omni D tranceiver and others like the Triton etc. by running it continuously. Before this Mod I had to let the rig "warm up for a very long time usually an hour before it stabilized enough for me .This technique is applicable to many other rigs as well . The theory is that the oscillator will eventually stabilize if allowed to run long enough which it did . I got the idea from my early days in Amateur radio Many "old timers" would run their tube type VFO's 24/7 for the same reasons with similar results . Power consumed here is probably less than an electric clock . Notice I have installed a LED light in the meter to remove the meter light heat as much as possible .
The power supply unit or "wall Wart" is a 12 volt light weight switching type these have really good voltage regulation and most of the newer ones are quite noise free. This Wall Wart power supply had a coaxial plug on it and I was able to find a matching socket for it in the junk box to mount on back of the Omni D . This socket had been purchased at Radio Shack which is now closed here . This Mod requires the installation of the coaxial socket on the back of the rig and an 8 volt 7808 TO220 regulator is installed next to it . Some VFO's or PTO's would not benefit from this due to parts located near the VFO that would heat it up causing drift but this is not the case in the OMNI D and works well . Is it perfect NO but it is a lot better and is now acceptable for my use. PLEASE EXCUSE my cheap hand held camera . 73 Bob
