I beat the game while streaming the playthrough in one of Russian Discord servers about danmaku games.
Today I played Konami's legendary 1989 beat 'em up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which gained huge popularity back in the day due to being an impressively looking game about the TMNT franchise, the support of 4 players at once and feature of notable characters of the cartoon series.
I played using Leonardo, which has short range normal attack, but a pretty long range strong attack. While he lacks the range of Donatello, the strong attack has a thicker hitbox, in my opinion, which should be able to get enemies better.
The game is pretty heavy on routing, so you need to iron out all stages in order to beat the game without using a continue. Also, Shredder is a hard final boss - I only got the clone unfollow trick on 6th try.
Did you know that there is dynamic difficulty in the game? The longer you stay alive, the higher the difficulty rank becomes. It makes the amount of HP of bosses higher and increases the amount of spawned enemies, so I do an intentional death on stage 4 to face the dual boss fight with bosses having lesser HP and to face stage 5 with lesser amount of enemies.
The hardest points of the game would be stage 5 (High choke potential), its second half when you get helicopters (They're annoying!) and stage 7, which has a lot of stuff to deal with. Also, pre-final (Krang) and final boss (Shredder) fights with very high choke potential, so you need good consistency on them.
The unimpressive combos don't help you a lot. There isn't a concept of throws, which makes beating big crowds an annoying experience, and your strong attacks can be interrupted because the enemies are quick enough to interrupt you either normally or mid-air.
If you think about the difficulty, the game is designed to drain coins out of kids, who played it. The sequel, TMNT Turtles in Time, is a much harder sequel and the one I'd like to tackle on in the future. It'll take much more time to beat on 1 credit, though!
Hey, you still here? Happy New Year! I wish you the best in the next 2022 year!
