[UPDATE] 18"30 by me: youtu.be/9lbPa07tyJc

In this run, I collect the star "Treasure Of The Ocean Cave" 3 frames (0.1 seconds) faster than the previous world record. The saves were as follows:

• Saved 2f by staying out of the water (and so not losing 3/4 of my speed) for an extra frame
• Saved 1f at the end by activating the final chest a frame earlier (mainly because I was able to dive 2f earlier than the previous best)

I actually did it... I beat a star in the 120-star TAS! And by 3 frames!

I actually started work on this way back in June. I quickly spotted the potential of the first save, and worked to try to complete the star. Unfortunately, without realising, I immediately lost one of the frames to bad movement in the water, so I only thought there was potential to save 1 frame. I then struggled to keep hold of that frame, and got frustrated & gave up.

However, quite recently, with the new 120-star TAS in full-swing and Kaze's Ghost Data hack now available (and my skills much-improved), I became motivated to try again. I re-did everything after the BLJ, and realised there was a second frame up for grabs (the theoretical max this technique could give is 3 frames, but practical limits reduce it to ~2.5). With the ghost data as reference, and a 2 frame lead, I continued to progress through the TAS. At the end, presumably due to improved optimisation around the third chest, I realised I could dive much earlier, and activate the last chest a frame earlier, taking my total to 3 frames as I finished the run.

I would explain everything about this TAS, but it'd take too much space. If you have any questions, ask in the comments!

One thing that is worth explaining is the ending - due to my choice of angle, I couldn't replicate the previous WR's ending (I can't kick off the wall). However, that ending route doesn't actually save time, rather, it just looks cool, so I went for an alternative. Interestingly, this actually brings me rather close to saving another frame! The backflip I did allowed me to gain more height before the ground-pound, meaning I have more VS when I collect the star. This causes me to fall quicker, but it just isn't enough to save an extra frame. Backflips also have fixed vertical speed, which means I can't manipulate speed to allow me to hit the star lower, unlike an ordinary jump (which doesn't go high enough to get max VS anyway).

A couple of important things to note:

• I didn't actually branch off the 120 star TAS until the start of the BLJ, so the inputs before then are still those done by Mickey/VIS.

• This video was run on the SM64 Ghost Race V1.1 ROMHack, by Kaze Emanuar. It actually incurs a lag frame shortly after entering the water, so the timing based on this video would actually be 18"35. However, I've also run the TAS on regular SM64, and this lag frame didn't occur. I guess it must be because of the extra object on-screen...

If you want the .m64 for whatever reason, just ask me :-)
