Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of Cruis'n World Arcade (1/3) El Diablo in 21:41.54
GOAL:
-Complete the game as quickly as possible
-Try to beat the times on Twin Galaxies at:
twingalaxies.com/game/cruisn-world/arcade
twingalaxies.com/game/Cruisn-world-rev-l23/mame
-The first thing you learn while playing this game is that you never need to brake or release the gas pedal. All curves can be taken at full speed, but you lose speed when sliding.
-I did not see any advantage in choosing the manual transmission
-I did 4 TAS of this game improving my times in each one. I decided to post all four, not just the last one, because I think there's something fun to look at in all of them.
-1 - El Diablo in 21:41.54 This video
-2 - Humvee in 21:11.27 youtu.be/5_mN4Ry-5e0
-3 - Road King in 20:52.36 youtu.be/VHbRSziEePk
-4 - Banzai GTV in 20:10.92 youtu.be/3XDq4eCPxu4
-As my main goal is to achieve the best possible time, I didn't mind not finishing first. To finish first, you have to be a little lucky. The first cars must be involved in an accident, otherwise the chances of finishing first are very slim.
===Special moves:
==Horn
-While racing, press Start to honk the horn. The Humvee will fire its machine gun instead (but without causing damage to anyone).
==Wheelie
-To do a Wheelie , double-tap the gas pedal. You will accelerate a little faster for a short time if you are not close to your maximum speed. I did some testing and it's useful when accelerating at the start of a stage. (I used it on the 3rd video) This gave me a few more mph (less than 10) for the same distance.
-To jump over a slower moving car or one coming at you, pull a wheelie right before you hit it. If you do it right you should still be pulling a wheelie when you hit the car you are jumping over and will not crash.
==Ride on Two Wheels
-Double-tap the gas (Wheelie) while turning a corner.
==Jumbo Flip (1 second bonus)
-When you are going up a hill, do a wheelie at the top. The car will do a Back Flip.
-And one second per backflip will be subtracted from your time at the end.
==??? see video 2 or 3
===Comments:
-In this first TAS, I am learning the game and I hope to spot things that I will be able to improve in the next TAS.
-For this first video I selected the El Diablo car because I wanted a car that sticks to the road.
-I tried to do a 'Jumbo Flip' at every opportunity, on every jump, to get 1 second bonus as many times as possible.
-Australia: I wasn't able to jump at all the places I should have, mainly because of the traffic.
-Australia: even with 5 jumps, my time is much slower than the best time on Twin Galaxies. (1:17.45 vs 1:08.99) I'm starting to think there's something I don't know about. It is surely not the difference of 3 mph with the fastest car that explains this significant gap.
-Egypt: Again, my time is much slower than Twin Galaxies. (1:34.21 vs. 1:27.60). I think there are more places I could have jumped.
-Germany: I was 2 seconds slower than the time on Twin Galaxies.
-Italy: Once again, I was 2 seconds slower. I'm not sure what I could improve. At least I finished first this time, thanks to the others who had an accident.
-France: Again, 2 seconds slower.
-Mexico: Many other jumping opportunities are available, I should have done more.
===Notable Moments:
-0:10 I used the view buttons to select another car and change its color. Hold view 1 or 2 for a selection of 8 more cars. Press View 3 to change color.
-0:39 Instead of colliding with another car, you can jump over it with minimal loss of speed by performing a Wheelie. This is preferable to a collision with another car.
-1:50 Turn the corner on two wheels (double-tap the accelerator when turning a corner)
-11:10 The game seems to have problems detecting collisions between cars on stairs. But I wouldn't recommend doing this in a real game since I tried it several times and it didn't always work.
-27:01 I did a Wheelie so as not to slow down too much due to an inevitable collision
===Shortcuts:
-Hawaii 0:51
-China 6:30 and 6:59
-New York 25:12 and 25:19
-I have found 2 more shortcuts not shown here, see my other videos
-In conclusion I am far from beating all the times posted on Twin Galaxies. There's probably a trick I don't know about (As you'll see in video 2).
-Everything I did in these TAS is achievable by a human with a little luck (or not just a little?). I didn't use any special tricks or cheats, just precision driving.

![[TAS] Pole Position arcade (67500)
Tool-assisted speed-run (TAS) for Pole Position arcade.
This is my first try at a TAS for Pole Position, I will try to improve it.
Qualif: 55:03
Lap 1: 56:02
Lap 2: 52:21
Lap 3: 52:53
Lap 4: 52:83
Total: 214:29
Cars = 140, bonus time = 30
Score: 67500
I just realized that I lost speed while overtaking the last car, so the last lap should be 52:70 total 214:16, but it do not improve the score. I will upload a new video if I improve more.
NOTE:
-I did not find any special trick, I just apply the usual stuff for this game:
-keep the maximum speed as long as possible
-drive on the inside of the curves

![[TAS] Paperboy Arcade 214,536 (Easy Street)
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Paperboy Easy Street 214,536
The goal of this TAS:
-Get the highest score possible
-This is an improvement from the last TAS. For this one I wanted to verify if you can do a bigger score by keeping just one subscriber since this give you more things to shoot. But I think that the two method are about the same. The biggest difference here is that I have a better pattern for the training course. I will apply what I learned to the other TAS to see what score I can reach.
Notes:
-Difficulty: Medium Hard (factory setting)
-I try to shoot things in that order:
-The flowers give the most points, there is a house (103) that give 1725 breakage points. But you have to run over them.
-Next are things that go ZAP! (250 points) (mostly humans)
-Windows, lamps, tombstone award progressive points if they are from the same house. (100, 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250 points)
-Jump (200 points)
-Others: trash can, doghouse (100 points)
-There is a limitation for how much newspaper can be in the air at the same time.
-This number is 9
-But, this number decrease by one each time you shoot a mailbox
-At the beginning of a day and for the training course, the number is reset to 9
-if you shoot 9 mailboxes, you cannot shoot anymore
-So, It is impossible to shoot the 10 mailboxes.
-I am not sure if it is a feature or a bug.
-So, you have to think of how many newspapers you want to be able to shoot at the same time.
-I think 4 or 5 is a good number be able to shoot consecutive windows
-So, the maximum mailbox you want to shoot is 4 or 5
-In the training course, you have to take a jump to replenish your stock of newspapers
-In the training course you can shoot targets that are far left, even if you cannot see the awarded score
-Middle Rd. and Hard way are coming soon

Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of Targ Arcade 100,000 in 2:52
GOAL: reach 100,000 points as fast as possible.
Notes:
-I wanted to get to 100,000 by shooting something instead of getting it with the bonus. That is why I shooted a police at the end. I may have lost 1 or 2 second there.

![[TAS] Space Invaders arcade 5490 points on Wave 1 (15 saucers)
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Space Invaders arcade 5490 points on wave 1
Goal of the TAS:
-Get the maximum possible score on wave 1
Notes:
-It is possible to shoot 15 saucers on wave 1
-As you probably know, the saucer give a mystery bonus that is not a big mystery anymore.
The sequence of score is:
50, 50,100,150,100,100, 50,300,100,100,100, 50,150,100,100
The value of the bonus is taken from this table, but change for the next value each time the player shoot a bullet.
The saucer appear every 1536 ($600) frames, so every 25.6 sec.
The timer reset at the start of every wave except for wave 1 where the timer wait for the invaders to drop down a row before starting.
-It is not required to shoot the saucer as soon as possible because the timer for the next saucer start when the saucer appear on the screen, not when it is shot.
-The timer stop when the top row of invaders is 3 row from the bottom. So when you have to shoot the before last row of invaders, no saucer can appear from there.
-The optimal number of columns for the invaders to take the longest time to reach the bottom of the screen is 7.
When there is 11 invaders wide it take 17 steps to reach the other side of the screen.
Each frame one invader move one step, one after the other.
When all 55 invaders are there it take 935 frames to reach the other side of the screen (55 * 17)
Each column is 8 steps wide.
If you shoot one column from any side of the formation (not in the middle) the invaders will take 8 more steps to reach the side of the screen
So, 50 invaders, 17 + 8 = 25 steps then 50 * 25 = 1250 frames to cover the width of the screen
Then:
11 columns: 55 * 17 = 925 frames
10 columns: 50 * 25 = 1250 frames
9 columns: 45 * 33 = 1485 frames
8 columns: 40 * 41 = 1640 frames
7 columns: 35 * 49 = 1715 frames Optimal value
6 columns: 30 * 57 = 1710 frames
5 columns: 25 * 65 = 1625 frames
4 columns: 20 * 73 = 1460 frames
3 columns: 15 * 81 = 1215 frames
2 columns: 10 * 89 = 890 frames
1 columns: 5 * 97 = 485 frames
If you shoot invaders in the middle of the formation, there is less invaders to move so they will take less time to reach the side.
For example if you shoot 2 column in the middle of the formation, the formation is still 11 invaders wide but with less invaders to move so:
45 * 17 = 765 frames, conclusion, the formation will drop faster, you will not have time to shoot 8 saucers.
Example from a video I saw: shoot the 3 right columns so that the formation is 8 invaders wide. Then shoot 2 columns in the middle to make a safety gap.
With 30 invaders remaining in the formation: 30 * 41 = 1230 frames, with this method you can shoot 10 saucers, but not more.
-Since that when you shoot invaders the formation move faster, I shoot the 4 columns at the last possible moment.

![[TAS] Wacko arcade (24 levels)
Tool-assisted speed-run (TAS) of 24 levels (3 loops) of Wacko (Arcade).
Wow, this game can be played really fast.
Its as if it was Speedy Gonzalez who where playing this game.
Notes:
On the first few levels there is 2 ways that I lose time.
-I eventually realize that I could move on the same frame that I fire without making a mistake. It has more impact on the last phase when you shoot small monsters/eggs/bats because you can shoot at 2 frames interval, instead of 3 when shooting large monsters.
So, from level 13 you can see the small monsters/eggs get shot a bit faster.
-It took me a while to realize that I was losing many seconds between shooting the last egg/bat and the beginning of the animation. The game slowly move the character to the center of the screen.
So, from level 15 onward, I try to finish the levels as near as possible to the center of the screen to minimize the time lost.
I could not correct those without redoing the entire TAS, but I will eventually redo this TAS to correct it.

![[TAS] Jr. Pac-Man 20 rounds (Arcade)
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Jr. Pac-Man 20 rounds (Arcade)
Goal:
-Play at least until the ghosts stop turning blue.
Notes:
-This is not a speedrun.
-For the first 7 turns, I take out all 4 ghosts with each Energizer. After that, I dont waste time waiting for them to regroup properly.
-If you want to see how a good player does this, watch: https://view.vzaar.com/22421061/player
-The game consists of 7 different mazes. Then, the mazes repeat in a loop, from the fourth to the seventh. (Until the game locks up?)
See @gordontaylor2815s comment (Thanks) on what happens on round 144 and after.
-The Bonus item explodes on contact with the Energizer, destroying and removing both the item and the Energizer from the maze (as shown at 23:25 26:00 38:28).
-However, I dont understand what happens at 36:06: the Energizer is still there. Is this a bug?
@gordontaylor2815 wrote: I believe that when the bonus is dispatched around the maze, its pathing is set to end by destroying a specific target energizer, not just the first one it comes across
No invincible cheats were used
-The collision detection routine seem to be the same as in Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man.
-Its relatively easy for the TAS to harmlessly pass through a ghosts. The trick is frame and pixel perfect, do not try this at home :)
-This happens because collision detection is not at the pixel level. The collision detection works by keeping track of what 8x8 pixel square all the objects are on. So if you step off of your square onto a ghosts square and he steps off his square and on to yours simultaneously you didnt ever occupy the same square.
-For a more detailed explanation, see this link: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/passing-through-ghosts-in-pac-man
-See at 16:11 and 17:49, the player passing through a ghost.
-When you eat a pellet, you slow down slightly. When you eat a large pellet, you slow down more.
-When you take a turn, you go a little faster because the player cuts corners, unlike the ghosts (see a good example at 28:59 and 30:05).
-From round 16 onwards, the ghost are faster than the player.
-The TAS uses 3 methods to get rid of the red ghost when its closely following the player:
-Use the pass through ghosts trick. (20:50 35:49) (I tried not to use this trick too much because its not fun to watch and I could have used it all the time.)
-When the red ghost is almost in contact with the player, he will take an upward (or left) path if he has the chance. (18:19 22:13 27:28 36:56 39:48)
-Wait at an intersection, then, at the last frame possible, go in the opposite direction from him. He will usually go upwards. (22:48 25:24 40:08)
-But these tricks (except for the pass through) dont work with the pink ghost after round 16 because he is too fast. We need to lure him onto a path that takes him away before he gets too close behind the player. (19:30 40:24)
-44:15 In this case, I had to go through him as a last resort.
-The blue ghosts follow random paths.
-On the last Energizer of round 4 (12:28), I manipulated the rng by choosing the right moment (frame) to consume it, so that the ghosts would take the path I wanted and I could eat them all.
-In the sixth round, for the last two Energizers, it took me much longer than expected to regroup the ghosts. So I used an experts technique, which you can see here: https://view.vzaar.com/22421061/player
-This technique relies on the fact that if a ghost leaves the screen, it changes direction to reappear. (16:26 16:45)
Time ghosts stay blue and nb pellets for each rounds:
-Round 1 = 6 seconds - 548 pellets and 6 Energizer
-Round 2 = 3 seconds - 560 pellets and 6 Energizer
-Round 3 = 2 seconds - 526 pellets and 6 Energizer
-Round 4 = 2 seconds - 526 pellets and 6 Energizer
-Round 5 = 2 seconds - 528 pellets and 6 Energizer
-Round 6 = 1 second - 512 pellets and 4 Energizer
-Round 7 = 1 second - 540 pellets and 4 Energizer

![[TAS] Buggy Boy Jr (All hidden balls) (Offroad) (142,170) Arcade
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Buggy Boy/Speed Buggy Arcade - Offroad
The goal of this TAS:
-Show the location of the 11 hidden soccer balls.
-Get the highest score possible.
Score: 142,170
This is my first try, I am sure I can do better. I can probably stay on two wheels longer.
Note:
-Jumping and driving on two wheels increase the score faster. It is about the same as driving through a 250 gate every 2 seconds
-When driving on two wheels, the flags and gates give double points
-Soccer balls, hidden or not, give 2000 points
-It seem that two soccer ball animation cannot play at the same time. On the last lap, the last hidden ball is near a real ball, I got the two. You can hear the sound of the hidden one but you cannot see it.

![[TAS] Arkanoid Returns Arcade (100 Rounds) (Very hard)
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Arkanoid Returns Arcade (100 Rounds) (Very hard)
This video is just a superplay. I finished the game relatively quickly but it could be done faster. Sometimes I chose to have fun rather than going fast.
If we had the choice between infinite angles, some rounds would be completed much faster, but we can only choose between about 6 different angles at which the ball bounces on the paddle.
To get a high score like in Twin Galaxies, you have to shoot many enemies while keeping the ball in play but without ending the round. This is why the score for this TAS is about half of what is posted there.
If you start a game normally, you will only play the first 50 rounds.
A code can be entered before starting the game to start a new one from round 51, ending with a confrontation with Doh (round 100).
To start on round 51:
-Insert coin(s)
-Press Player 1 button 1 three times
-Press Player 1 button 2 once
-Press Player 1 Start button
-You should see Round 51
This also works if you use the Player 2 buttons with Player 2 Start
Items: (Translated from japanese)
S = Slow - Slows down the speed of the energy ball.
C = Catch - Catch the energy ball and press the button to serve.
E = Expand - The length of the baus increases.
D = Disruption - The energy ball splits into eight pieces.
L = Laser - Press the button to fire a laser shot.
M = Mega Ball - Energy balls become piercing bullets. (Eliminate bricks without bouncing on them)
G = Gigantic - The energy ball becomes larger for a certain period of time. (Like Mega Ball but larger)
B = Break - You can escape through the exits on the left and right.
T = Thunder - The ball can be hit back only once with rays of light extending from the left and right sides of the baus.
P = Player - The players stock increases by one.
Before starting level 51, I had to sacrifice a life. This is the only way Ive found (short of a reset) to get the sound to play normally. If I didnt lose any lives, the sound of the ball bouncing wouldnt play at all. Maybe its because Mame classifies this game as having imperfect sound.
As you can see at 1:07, 4:19, 29:44, if there are already 2 items going down, the third one will be lost.
Exploding enemies can help you by eliminating nearby bricks (25:34). When you touch a balloon it splits into 3 small balloons, the small balloons eliminate the bricks they touch (1:18, 3:09, 4:51), which can be very useful.
The power-ups: are they RNG, or are they always the same?
My theory is that some bricks are assigned an item, but the items are in a fixed order, so in round 1, 5 of the 7 yellow bricks will earn you an item, but the items will always be in the same order regardless of which yellow brick that you hit. The order for the 1st round is: D G L E D.
And keep in mind that you cant have 2 items on screen at the same time, the item you should have gotten will be skipped. This does not apply to transparent bricks that will gives you the shown item.
This is just my theory. This seems to work for the first few rounds but should be checked on later rounds to see if it holds up.

Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of NARC Arcade in 9:58 (2,047,550)
Goal: Finish the game as quickly as possible.
Time starts when you land on the ground on the first stage (0:32) and ends when you open the final door in the jackpot room. (10:30)
Notes:
-This game runs at 55 fps, thats why scrolling isnt smooth at 60 fps.
-I lost exactly 271 frames (4.92 seconds at 55 fps) while collecting the 24k gold in the jackpot room. I did it to have a decent score at the end.
-At first glance, it looks weird that the character can walk without being hit by all enemy fire. But believe me, I died very often. What to look for is the shadow of the bullets. You only die if a bullets shadow collides with your shadow.
-I lost a life with the boss at the end. It was a bit faster that way.
-I lost a bit of energy here and there. I should have worked more on those parts. It is possible to finish the game without losing energy. (Except maybe with the last boss)
-I might do another TAS of this game, but my goal will be to get a high score. But it will take much longer to do.
There is a video with a score of over 6,000,000 and it took 1 hour 18 minutes. It will be difficult and long to do better than that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrmLqPAxIns

![[TAS] Galaga Arcade 160.9% hit-miss ratio (Double ship) (31 stages)
Tool-assisted superplay (TAS) of Galaga arcade (Double ship) 160.9% hit-miss ratio (31 stages)
I did a 200% video: https://youtu.be/mWZYJykjvGw
Goal: To get the highest hit-miss ratio possible in 31 stages
Notes:
-I will have to do another TAS because I think I can do a lot better by applying what I learned.
-About halfway through the TAS, I realized that I didnt have to shoot the extra bugs at the start of the waves, the ones that try to hit you and come out of the screen instead of going into the formation.
-So from wave 17 and beyond I focused on only shooting when I can hit 2 bugs at a time.
-Since the collision hit box is smaller than the sprite, when you have the double ship, there is a space between the 2 ships wide enough for an enemy bullet to pass between the 2 ships. (3:04) (3:45)
-Whats the deal with wave 18? (7:24) No extra bugs, no shooting at the start of the wave ???
-I saw a few videos on YouTube where it happened and others that it didnt. I dont know why this is happening.
