In today’s video I’m walking through the beautiful Tarot de Marseille Gassmann, reproduced by Lo Scarabeo as part of their Anima Antiqua series.
The Anima Antiqua line is dedicated to faithfully restoring rare and historically significant decks, and this edition preserves a fascinating 19th century Swiss take on the Marseille tradition. Originally printed in Geneva around the 1840s by François Gassmann, this deck offers a distinctive regional variation within the Type II Tarot de Marseille lineage.
We’ll take a close look at the premium packaging, the multilingual historical booklet written by Giordano Berti, and of course the cards themselves. The Gassmann stands out for its vibrant colour palette, striking woodblock aesthetic, floral decorative elements and its wonderfully preserved historic quirks. Unlike modern reinterpretations, this reproduction honours the original print style, giving us a true glimpse into how tarot may have looked and felt in 19th century Switzerland.
