The Trump administration has made threats of significant tariffs against Canada, citing border security risks and the flow of fentanyl and unwanted aliens from Canada. People on both sides of the border are outraged by the situation and are making vows of retaliatory measures. Perhaps there is another layer to these apparent trade wars - lying within Canada's climate policies. The Trump administration has pulled out of the Paris Agreement and from all climate agreements dating back to 1992. A report by the US House Judiciary Committee of the spring of 2024 cited groups like Mark Carney's GFANZ (Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero) as being part of what they called the 'climate cartel'. The report claims the 'climate cartel' has declared a GLOBAL WAR on the American way of life, including use of fossil fuels, flying, driving and even eating. They also denounce the coercive tactics of groups like GFANZ and Climate Action 100+ for forcing companies to make "immaterial disclosure of carbon emissions," a tactic being pushed in the US and Canada. By contrast, Canada is persisting in trying to be a 'climate leader' and will be forcing mandatory emissions reporting on corporations, AND it wants to align with the European Union's "CBAM" - Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which is a climate policy tariff on imports. Mark Carney, potential leader of the federal Liberal party and thus incumbent Prime Minister, should he win that race, is a promoter of CBAM and a closer alliance with the EU. The Canadian government included CBAM in the Fall Economic Statement, which Robert Lyman, policy analyst, suggested was a problem, writing on the Friends of Science blog: "What timing! Proposing to impose carbon-based tariffs to restrict imports from the United States would be the equivalent of waving a red flag to the Trump Administration bull."
