The Type 56X was an experimental TARDIS designed to investigate the boundaries separating parallel universes.
Unlike conventional TARDISes, which navigate the space-time continuum of a single reality, the 56X was equipped with an experimental Void Space Drive. The drive was intended to allow the vessel to temporarily breach the barriers that separate one universe from another.
In theory, given enough power, the process was simple..... in practice, the boundaries between realities proved considerably less accommodating.
The 56X was never approved for operational use. Its maiden voyage was intended to be a controlled demonstration of the new drive.
It was also its only recorded voyage.
The Ethics Committee of the Academy of Temporal Sciences on Gallifrey subsequently banned all further research into the project and ordered the research to be buried.
All evidence of the 56X's existence was classified.
