The Bilby population at Mallee Cliffs National Park (NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service) is growing in leaps and bounds - more than doubling since the species’ reintroduction in 2019. 📈
Recent health checks showed great health across all captures, and three of the founding females from source populations on Thistle Island and Charleville were found. The population estimate of 121 individuals allowed for another release of Bilbies from the breeding area into the broader fenced area.
The Bilby population at Mallee Cliffs is predicted to grow to over 1,100 individuals. Their presence will contribute to rebuilding Mallee Cliffs’ historical assemblage, helping restore lost ecosystem processes, and contributing to the maintenance of adaptive evolutionary potential in the Bilby by exposing populations to environmental pressures that existed historically across its range.
The successful establishment of this population underscores the effectiveness of AWC's applied conservation approach, guided by meticulous monitoring data and best practice science.
