Abstract: In this session, we will explore the development of a new public-facing Shiny application that visualizes longitudinal state and territorial public health survey data (astho.org/profile).
First, we will cover the app's layout and design. We will provide insight on how we gave it a “modern” feel through our use of color, illustration, and bslib card and accordion features. We will also showcase our responsive column layout, which makes for a seamless user experience on devices of all sizes (full screen, tablet, and mobile).
Next, we will explore our varied uses of the highcharter package. We will walk participants through our aesthetic choices and how we used functions and spreadsheets so non-R-users can update and maintain components such as titles, data notes, and subtitles.
Lastly, we will highlight some unique and custom features included in the app, such as its data stories and filtering tool. We will cover the importance of providing context to data in a public-facing applications and how to effectively combine narrative with text.
